Options for Admission

The National Institute of Genetics (NIG) hosts the Genetics Program of the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI and offers three application options for international students who wish to obtain a PhD degree: NIG Global Scholar (NIG-GS) Selection, General Admission and Embassy Recommendation for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship.

NIG-GS ER GA

NIG-GS: NIG Global Scholar Selection

This option is only for the 5-year PhD program. The Genetics Program, SOKENDAI should be the applicant’s first-choice for graduate studies and he/she must reside be residing outside Japan at the time of application.

ER: Embassy Recommendation for the MEXT Scholarship

This option is for both 5-year and 3-year PhD programs.

GA: General Admission

This option is for both 5-year and 3-year PhD programs. Exams and interviews are administered at the Genetics Program, SOKENDAI, in either English or Japanese. The examinations for those enrolling in October are held in summer or in winter. Those enrolling in April also have two opportunities to take either the summer or winter exam.
