What is NIG Intern Program?
National Institute of Genetics (NIG)/ Department of Genetics, SOKENDAI offers a 10 week research internship program for undergraduate students who wish to gain experience in scientific lab work.
NIG has 41 labs, studying a variety of topics in life sciences, including molecular and cell biology, developmental biology, plant biology, neurobiology, population biology and evolution, structural biology, genome biology and bioinformatics. Each intern will join ongoing research projects in a world-class research group. Interns can also participate in various departmental activities, such as lectures for our graduate students, journal clubs, and seminars by outstanding researchers in and out of NIG. Japanese lessons are also available. Stipend will be provided to cover traveling and living expenses, lodging in the institute's guesthouse and overseas travel accident and sickness insurance.

How to apply?
Prefinal year undergraduates (3rd year of 4-year Bachelor course, 4th year of 5-year Master/ Bachelor dual-degree course) or 1st year students of 2-year master course are eligible to apply for NIGINTERN 2012.

Students interested in applying should prepare the following material by PDF files.

1. A letter of motivation or self-advertisement of about 500 words.
    Please name the file as "Family Name_Given Name_1" (e.g. "MENDEL_Gregor_1")

2. Curriculum vitae including school record and your year.
    Please name the file as "Family Name_Given Name_2"

3. Two letters of recommendation from your teachers.
    (to be sent directly to info-soken@lab.nig.ac.jp by the recommenders)
    Please name the file as "LOR_Applicants' Family Name_Applicants' Given Name"

Specify fields of interest (molecular biology/cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, evolution, etc.) or indicate host laboratories of your choice, and the period(s) the applicant is unavailable for internship in a letter of motivation or self-advertisement. If any period is fine, mention it as well. This information is essential for the selection process.

The subject of your e-mail and the e-mail from the recommender should be "NIGINTERN 2012".

Important dates
    Internship Period: 10 weeks in mid-May to September, 2012.
    Application Deadline: January 20, 2012.
    Notice of Selection Results: February 29, 2012.
