This internship was one of the most amazing and life-changing experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment I got accepted I was beyond excited to start this journey and discover what this new chapter will hold for me. My time in Japan was even better than what I’ve imagined, I got to experience the stunning Japanese culture, which is truly mesmerizing, and work in a very supportive and welcoming lab environment.

I was assigned to Nakamura sensei’s lab, and throughout my internship period my project was focused on trying to discover variations in the cat genome that can potentially cause cat diseases. From the first day, Nakamura sensei was very supportive and kind in every aspect. I’m very thankful to everyone in the lab, especially Mao-san who was guiding me through every step in the internship.

During my stay I also got the opportunity to make small trips during the weekends to get a glimpse of the amazing Japanese culture and beauty. I went to Tokyo, Ito, Izu, Hakone, Atami and even hiked Mt Fuji. Throughout these few weeks, I got to make truly unforgettable friendships with the other interns. we would make our trips to explore Japan together, go to shrines at midnight to make wishes, support, and care for each other like we were a small family. It was beyond wonderful getting to know each one of them and getting to learn about their cultures.

The NIGINTERN program is truly a great opportunity for students passionate about research and eager to explore Japanese culture. I’m sincerely grateful to the NIGINTERN operation team for granting me this great opportunity!
