The opportunity to take part in this research internship has been an unforgettable experience in my academic journey. During these six weeks, we were offered numerous opportunities to work and interact with pioneers in different fields of genetics, which was a perfect way not only to explore deeper into what we have already learnt but also to get introduced to newly emerging areas of research.

I joined Murayama-senseiʼs group – Chromosome Biochemistry lab, and my project focused on the coordination between DNA replication and sister chromatid cohesion establishment. From planning the experiments to executing them with utmost details, the lab gave me a well-rounded experience with hands-on techniques. I have gained an extensive understanding and profound appreciation for the meticulous planning required to perform assays reconstituting the cellular processes in vitro. Beyond the lessons, I am thankful to all the members for their support both in and out of the lab. I want to express my gratitude especially to Murayama-sensei, Kurokawa-san and Iwasaki-san for their guidance during the internship.

The weekends were spent exploring Japan. From the bustling streets of Dotonbori to the serene atmosphere of Nara, I was mesmerised by the beauty that this country has to offer. I enjoyed trying out the traditional Japanese cuisine, especially the delicate sushi and the savory okonomiyaki.

Apart from taking part in research activities, seminars and journal club meetings, my time in Japan greatly impacted my personal development. Navigating life through the barriers of cultural and linguistic differences provided me with a newfound sense of independence and adaptability.

I am grateful that I was a part of NIGINTERN2023, and I believe that the lessons I learned and the memories I made during my time in Japan will continue to shape my life for years to come.
