  • (ZIP/29.2MB)
English

(A, B) Proteins are synthesized at ribosomes inside the cell. The ribosome was assumed to incorporate 30 amino acids per second (ref. Physical Biology of the Cell, 2008, Garland). After the synthesis, proteins accumulate in ER, and then move to Golgi. From Golgi, the proteins are delivered to appropriate location (e.g. cell membrane). The time required for the trafficking depends on cell type and condition. It has been reported that a protein is secreted in about 30 minutes (ref. Boncompain et al. Nat Meth 9, 493-498, 2012). (B) shows only protein synthesis part.

Movie 9. Enzyme reaction

  • (ZIP/3.4MB)

  • (ZIP/20.8MB)
English

A hypothetical but typical enzyme reaction to degrade a substrate. Once a substrate binds to the enzyme, the degraded products dissociate from the enzyme ~1 microsecond later (ref. Physical Biology of the Cell, 2008, Garland).

Movie 10. Comparison between directed (motor) movement, diffusive movement, and electrical signals in nervous system

(A)

  • (ZIP/6.19MB)

  • (ZIP/30.2MB)

(B)

  • (ZIP/9.43MB)

  • (ZIP/36.8MB)
English

(A) A "hypothetical" motor moves along a cytoskeleton in a speed of 1 micro-m/sec. The orange spot moves randomly with a diffusion constant of 10 micro-m^2/sec, which is a typical diffusion constant for proteins inside the cell. The orange gradient reflects the average concentration of the orange spot diffusing from the center of the image. You can see from the movie that diffusion can reach farther in a short period of time, but in a longer time scale, the directed movement wins.
(B) further compares the signal of electrical signals in nervous system, which is about 50 m/sec.
