Applications Guidelines for NIG Postdoctoral Fellow 2015

1. Aim

The National Institute of Genetics (NIG) is recruiting postdoctoral fellows from all over the world with a variety of backgrounds. We aim at further promotion of research projects in NIG and fostering researchers with excellent research ability by letting promising young researchers engage in research activities in our institute for a certain period of time.  

2. Qualifications

A. Applicants must have obtained PhD degree (or equivalent) or are expected to obtain it by the time of employment. (Employment will be conditional on completion of the degree.) B. Applicants must also have sufficient research skills to promote research projects in our institute. Note: An employee who has been working at a research group in NIG for a period exceeding 1 year from the desired start date is not eligible to apply for the same research group.  

3. Number of Postdocs to be accepted

Approx. 5  

4. Start Date and Employment Period

(to be renewed each fiscal year) The period of employment is 3 years from the start date. In principal, positions will begin on April 1st, 2015. If necessary, the start dates may be shifted to any date between November 1st, 2014 and October 1st, 2015, but this date cannot be changed after submission of the application forms. For NIG-approved leaves and absence ( e.g., childbirth, child care, nursing etc.), the leave period will not be included in the period of employment.  

5. Position

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) (Discretionary working hour system is applicable.)  

6. Salary

Based on the rules of the Research Organization of Information and Systems that is the higher organization of the NIG, annual salary 4,100,000 JPY or more will be paid. Salary increase is not negotiable. This amount includes taxes and insurance package (provided by the MEXT Mutual Society of Health Insurance).

(Applicant should prepare and submit the following document 1 to 4 in the specified forms which can be downloaded from here. There is no specific form for document 5 and 6.)
1: Curriculum Vitae, Laboratory Name of Your Choice, Desired Starting Date Include name, DOB, age, sex, home address, contact address (such as work address including affiliation), e-mail address, academic background, professional experience, laboratory name of your choice including the name of PI, name and affiliation of the person who provides statement in document 5, desired start date. (Applicants who are expected to obtain PhD should specify the date of Degree Examination Board.) 2: Summary of Past Research (1 page) Applicants’ contribution to the past research should be described. 3: List of Publications, Presentations and Achievements Publications: Include paper title, author (if there are more than 6 authors, then include the number of authors and the order to applicant), journal title, volume number, year, peer reviewed or not Presentations (only given by applicants): Include title, conference name and date (They should be classified into invited talk, oral presentation and poster presentation. If you have received any presentation awards such as a poster award, they should be also described.) Achievements: Include awards (other than those above), and grants 4: Research Plan at NIG (5 pages in total) (1) Purpose including its background: 1 page (2) Research Outline: 2 pages (3) Features and Creative Ideas (including significance of research at NIG): 1 page (4) Annual Plan for 3 years: 1 page 5: Statement from Supervisor (1 letter) Applicants should ask someone (immediate supervisor in university, for example) who knows their work and personality well to write a statement. He/she is required to submit the statement to the office below directly by him/herself as an e-mail attachment. He/she may be contacted and asked for further comments when necessary. 6: Statement from Host PI (1 letter) Applicants are requested to consult with their prospective PI about their research project in advance. Host PI is required to submit the statement to the office below directly by him/herself as an e-mail attachment.
 

8. Application Method

Document 1 to 4 should be submitted by applicants and document 5 and 6 should be respectively submitted by supervisor and host researcher via e-mail in PDF format. 9. Selection Method

Preliminary Screening (Document Review) Applicants will be shortlisted based on their submitted documents. Selection result will be e-mailed directly to all applicants by the end of July. (Please contact Research Promotion Team (kenkyo-mail@nig.ac.jp) if you do not receive e-mail by July 31st.) Secondary Screening (Interview) Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview. They are required to give a short (12 min.) presentation with PC and conduct question and answer session (18 min.) after that. Final selection results will be e-mailed to the candidates by the end of September. Substitute candidates will be announced at the same time. Interview Date: Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 Venue: National Institute of Genetics (Mishima-city, Shizuioka Prefecture) *Interview time will be notified to the candidate individually. Any commuting expenses to get the venue are to be borne by the candidate.
