Evolution shapes development, but can the reverse also occur? A key question is whether environmentally induced phenotypes can become heritable. Conrad H. Waddington introduced an influential concept for examining this issue, genetic assimilation, in which a phenotype that arises in response to an environmental stimulus becomes stably inherited after the stimulus is removed. This lecture examines the relationship between evolution and development through the lens of genetic assimilation.
