C₄ photosynthesis, which enables efficient CO₂ fixation under high-temperature and dry conditions, is known to have evolved independently more than sixty times during the evolutionary history of angiosperms. C₄ photosynthesis represents a system that requires a sophisticated coordination of different cell types. In this lecture, I would like to discuss how such a complex system could have arisen.
