The sex differentiation is essential for theirsurvival and evolution, and the sex determination occurs in theundifferentiated embryonic gonad. How the gonadal sex is determined has beenstudied for a long time using various animal species. In mammals, SRY (sex-determining region on the chromosome Y) had been found asa candidate for sex-determining gene. Together with previous reports, thispaper concluded that Sry is atestis-determining gene. In this lecture, we will discuss what is important inconsidering the sex determining mechanisms.

性分化は動物の生存や進化に重要な機構と考えられます。雌雄の性決定は性的に未分化な生殖腺で起きることが多くの動物で分かっており、この機構の解析は古くから行われてきました。哺乳類ではY染色体上のSRY遺伝子が性決定遺伝子の候補として見つかり、今回取り上げる論文はそれ以前の報告と併せて、Sry遺伝子が精巣への分化を決定する性決定遺伝子である事を結論付けました。本講義では、動物の性決定機構を考える上でどの様なことが重要か議論します。
