動物の行動は遺伝的要因と環境要因の影響を強く受けていることがこれまでに明らかになっている。多くの研究では遺伝子と行動との関連を明らかにしようとしているものの、環境要因がどのようにして動物の行動やその個性に影響を及ぼしているのか解明することは重要な問題である。Levine, Denenbergやその共同研究者らによる研究で、仔ラットの時期にヒトにより繰り返し触られると、そのラットは成体になってからストレス反応に影響が生じるということが示されていた。本日紹介する二つの論文では、Meaneyと共同研究者らが、ストレス反応の変化を及ぼす行動学的及び分子遺伝学的機構の解明を試みている。

It has been reported that behavior is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Even though many studies focus on genetic factors associated with behaviors, it is important to understand how environmental factors influence behaviors and cause individual difference. Previously, Levine, Denenberg, and others showed that the stress response of adult rat is modified by early environmental events, including infantile stimulation such as handling by humans. In the today's two papers, Meaney and colleagues tried to clarify behavioral and molecular basis of the environmental effect for the modification of stress response in rats.
