Week 14: Constructive Scientific Dialogue

No scientific research is conducted in complete seclusion. Every piece of evidence collected is compared, contrasted and examined in the light of all previous work in the field, as well as with consideration for new and future research. Scientific exploration progresses through constructive debate and discussion. Dialogue between scientists, as well as with other interested parties, is crucial, and as a new researcher starting out in your field, you need to become part of these dialogues and make your voice and opinions heard. You need to make sure you are involved and aware of current and future directions in your subject. Do not be afraid to join the debate! In this unit, we will look at how to stay focused, logical, and state your point of view clearly during a scientific debate. Above all, you should be prepared to accept and grow from any constructive criticism you may face from others.
