The formation of the animal body axis is a fundamental phenomenon in developmental biology. In particular, our understanding of left-right axis formation has been rapidly advanced by recent studies. In this lecture, I will first introduce the paper on the identification of gene expression showing left-right asymmetry in mammals, which was a breakthrough in a series of studies, and then discuss how the field has developed thereafter.
