  Progress report presentation as the Progress Report VA will be held from June to July for students who entered SOKENDAI in April and from December to January for students who entered SOKENDAI in October, via discussion between progress report organizing faculty and student. Other discussions will be held when necessary.
  Progress Report VB will be performed to have advices from and discussions with progress report committee members and other researchers on making their papers and Ph. D thesis. This is held in fall semester for students who entered SOKENDAI in April and in spring semester for students who entered SOKENDAI in October.

  One has to have credits for Progress IV to take Progress V. It is obligatory for all fifth-year students. If students or supervisors wish to decline or delay by special reason, they should inform Education Research Committee Chairperson and Department of Genetics Administrative Office before the distribution of members list of the student's seminar (see section 7). The members of the Committee should basically be the same as the committee members of Progress Report IV. If there is vacancy, new member is supplied. The deadline of a list submission will be end of May for students who entered SOKENDAI in April and end of November for students who entered in October. At this time, practical plan of the progress report presentation will be also distributed. To hold progress report presentation, students must submit Application for Course Registration to SOKENDAI. The course title for this interview is [Life Science Progress V].

  With cooperation of NIG colloquium committee, all D5 students (excluding exception described in section 6) must hold progress report seminar as a part of NIG Seminar. The abstract that will be distributed before the seminar should be in principle written in English. The seminar schedule should also be distributed at the same time. If some committee member cannot attend the student's NIG colloquium, the member must inform the organizing faculty of this committee beforehand and the organizing faculty may indicate the member how to do then. Committee should have a discussion with the student after the seminar and give advices considering of writing Ph.D. thesis. Committee members may give advices if necessary. If the advice is especially important, the organizing faculty of the committee should submit a report to the student, academic supervisor, and Education Research Committee Chairperson.

  To clarify status of study progress, and to receive appropriate suggestions from the progress committee on the points below if progress is not smooth
1. Whether research is proceeding toward completion of Ph.D. thesis
2. Whether the student understands values of research and its results, and whether one can judge status of the study toward its completion

   Students should take the Life Science Progress Report VA first and take the Life Science Progress Report VB depending on entry periods (or progress of academic work by leave of absence etc.). Public presentation is held as the Life Science Progress Report VA, and students have an individual interview or discussion for dissertation as the Life Science Progress Report VB. Exchange of opinions concerning other progress is held among progress committee members as necessary.

  To pass this course, students should present Progress Report or have discussion on thesis/paper as activities either IVA or IVB for each semester. In other opportunities than the Progress Report presentation and discussion, it is also needed for students to advance their researches and thought by discussing with laboratory staffs and other laboratory members and then to reflect those results to the progress report presentation and thesis writing. As the results of above activities, students are evaluated in one of four grades (A, B, C, D). Students get total of four credits, two credits for each semester when you obtain grades(A,B,C).
