Unit 2: Introducing Topics and Straightforward Explanations

Each slide or group of slides in the presentation will correspond to a specific topic with a specific message. This week we will focus on how to introduce this message and provide a logical explanation which the audience can easily follow and understand. These individual topics are similar to a paragraph in a written paper. Of course a logical flow of supporting evidence through the topic is necessary, but a clear introduction statement letting the audience know what information they will be able to attain from that topic is also essential. Often this means presenting a sort of conclusion or gsemi-conclusionh in the introduction. This is something that Japanese tend to avoid, but it an effective strategy for scientific presentations. In this weekfs class, students will have the opportunity to observe and compare different strategies. They will also be able to practice creating effective topic introductions themselves.
